Everyone around the world is getting pumped up for Nintendo’s first-ever mobile game ‘Super Mario Run,’ but there’s a catch. You’ll need a significantly constant and stable internet connection to be able to play Super Mario Run on your smartphones, says Nintendo.

As part of an interview with Mashable, Nintendo chief executive officer Reggie Fils-Amie stated the following;

We view our software as being a very important asset for us. And also for consumers who are purchasing the game, we want to make sure that we’re able to offer it to them in a way that the software is secure, and that they’re able to play it in a stable environment.

We wanted to be able to leverage that network connection … in a way that keeps the software secure,

When asked to elaborate on whether by “security,” Fils-Amie was actually referring to the always present risk of piracy of their game, the President of Nintendo America replied, “That’s correct.

He then continued to mention that security was at least partly the reason for why Nintendo had decided to launch their Super Mario Run first for iOS on December 15. This is well before the Android release which is speculated to take place sometime late in 2017. He then shed light on why all three of the game modes require a constant internet connection:

We had thought at one point that it would be nice to have the World Tour [story] mode available standalone, to be able to play without that connection. But then the challenge is when that’s operating in a standalone mode, it actually complicates the connection back to the Toad Rally and Kingdom modes.

As for more Super Mario Run news, we are now aware that the other Mushroom Kingdom universe characters will be present as unlockables in-game, though it’s currently unclear if any of those will lie behind the dreaded $10 ‘unlock all content’ paywall.
