When I was young and foolish, I often wondered about why someone would chose to spend all that effort in driving a motorcycle, when they also had the option to chose a car. To me, it seemed as if the comfort and the safety offered by the latter was the only way to travel. After growing up and having experienced the thrill offered by a bike, the adrenaline rush when you are speeding at 80 miles on a level stretch of road, well, I feel even more thankful for the safety features integrated in cars, than ever. However, BMW is working on concept bike that may just change the way people like me, look at motorcycles.
Cars are probably going to be way cooler in around a decade or so, thanks to the huge interest in autonomous and other technologies. However, what about their two wheeled counterparts? Well, if BMW has its way, motorbikes will undergo an absolutely drastic change as well.
The BMW concept bike will feature an artificial intelligence based assistant that will help riders feel the thrill with an added layer of security. The bike looks absolutely fascinating and owning one of these is definitely going to beat possessing almost any other ride out in the market — that we have available at present. However, the best part about these bikes is that when –and if — their concept is actually realized, you would be able to leave your helmet and protective gear at home — even when you are planning to zip through roads at high speeds.
BMW is calling this motorcycle as the Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 and it forms part of a whole series of motorcycles that are being conceptualized (and perhaps worked upon?) by the company. The focus here is to preserve the safety of drivers even when they are taking these bikes though the probably insane paces it is going to be capable of. While the company did not offer any specs, the engine on the bike appeared to be capable of producing some serious horsepower!
The AI on board BMW’s future motorbikes will still leave you in control. However, as soon as it feels that an accident or an unpleasant condition is imminent, its high powered on-board computers will slam on and artificial intelligence will hold your hand and help you out of your predicament. BMW says that the bike will be so safe, that you could take it out for a spin without fussing with motorcycle jackets and heavy helmets — unless of course, if you are donning them on for appeal, go ahead.
It is also supposed to be self balancing. So, you don’t need stands to park it and it would be almost impossible to fall off unless you are actually trying. The bike is also capable of anticipating the road ahead and will offer its driver tips upon what to do to avoid accidents.
Here is how the company describes its Vision Next 100,
Glasses instead of a helmet, light clothing, full balance without a stand: just three of a great many aspects which could become standard in motorcycling and give that feeling of freedom a new dimension in an increasingly digitalised world. And the best thing about it: this vision vehicle is already here. Introducing the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100.
And the looks? Well, it could certainly hold its own with even something out of Tron.
The bike is still a concept and won’t hit the roads anytime soon, however, it is pretty damn cool and gives us a look into what automakers have planned for our futures. Meanwhile, we leave you with a video that shows off the Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 motorcycle. Go knock yourself out and don’t forget to share the news with all your bike totting buddies as well!
