A couple of weeks ago, we did an article on the Mars Colonial Transporter and described Elon Musk’s hunt for suitable names. It had been recently revealed that the MCT can actually go beyond Mars and as such, Musk asked the twitterati for a few suggestions. While addressing the audience at the keynote in Mexico today, the SpaceX CEO said that the spaceship may be named “Heart of Gold”.

Addressing the crowds, Musk said,

We’re thinking about names. The first ship that goes to Mars, my current favorite for it is Heart of Gold from The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

In case you are unaware of it, the Heart of Gold is a fictional spaceship in Douglas Adam’s acclaimed novel, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”. It is a good read, although it does mess up the science of things. For example, the ship is powered by an improbability drive that in turn, has a very hot cup of tea at its center. The improbability engine that lets everyone abroad travel between stars, also introduces them to seemingly random stuff such as a group of monkeys that want to discuss Hamlet with them.

Well, Musk’s spaceship is is certainly going to be way less colorful — although it will hopefully have more technology than a cup of very hot tea — and it will merely be traveling between planets for now. However, it will still be the first vehicle capable of carrying humans beyond the confines of earth and into the rest of the solar system.

I like the fact that it’s driven by infinite improbability,  because I think our ship is also extremely improbable.

If Musk’s enterprises are successful, the ship’s name will likely be something that will form part of our children’s textbooks in a few decades or so. The “Heart of Gold” certainly sounds right — noble, courageous and all that. Although, as Musk too care to note, the acronym wasn’t perhaps the best thing.

The HOG will take the first humans to Mars? Hilarious.
