Touch the floor and die! Such were the rules of a common household game for every child in his or her middle school years. High schoolers couldn’t care less and parents just weren’t a fan of kids and their friends jumping around on family furniture.

Imaginations ran wild as you saw the floor as hot scolding lava and every object that could hold your weight above it as a savior and every tool you could use to push your friends into the lava as a weapon. Last man standing wins. Bit of a nostalgia trip there huh?

Klei Entertainment, an independent studio based out of Vancouver, Canada, released a game-play trailer of their latest game, Hot Lava, yesterday. They have previously been responsible for 2D titles such as Shank and Don’t Starve and Hot lava is their first 3D venture.

Hot Lava, the game developers first 3D game, is their take on the classic children’s game where the only rule is that you can’t touch the floor(simplicity, hun!). In the game, however, lava is literally everywhere. As is visible in the game-play trailer, you start off with the classic “house flooded by lava” and eventually make your way out-doors to larger locations that present newer and harder challenges and opportunities with ropes and wall-running, adding a touch of parkour to the kids game.

There is no information as of yet on when Hot Lava will be coming out, but you can sign up for a beta at the game’s website.

Talking more about the ideology behind the game, it’s Steam page reads:

Hot Lava transports you back to your childhood imagination. Relive those moments of excitement, joy, and chaos. Traverse distinct worlds, from school hallways to the memories of your darkest fears. This is a game of dexterity and ingenuity, you will have to use all your skills to complete the treacherous obstacles that await. But whatever you do…don’t touch the floor.
