To recognise new companies with a strong growth prospect and brand presence, Branding agency Interbrand has released a report on emerging brands. And there are two companies from India which have managed to make their mark in the report. Mobile payments company Paytm and restaurant discovery and food ordering platform Zomato have grabbed a place in the final list of 60 brands.

Interbrand partnered with Facebook, New York State Exchange, and Ready Set Rocket to prepare this inaugural report called ‘Breakthrough Brands’. The report aims to identify companies less than 10 years old who have both successful business model and a strong brand presence.

From their earliest days, these Breakthrough Brands have been focused on managing their brands and delivering integrated experiences to their customers. We believe such efforts leave them well-poised to achieve significant growth in the months and years ahead,

says Interbrand’s Global CEO, Jez Frampton.

Interbrand chose 60 brands for the final list out of 200 brands. A global network of key influencers had chosen these brands for final selection.

Zomato found a place under Food and Beverage category. Notably, Zomato is one of the few Indian startups present in multiple countries. Two other global startups namely Deliveroo from the UK and Blue Apron from US appeared in this category with Zomato.

On the other hand, Paytm has found a place under the Growing Global category. The category lists brands that are global from day one due to their unique and differentiated approach.

Speaking about Paytm, Interbrand wrote in a note,

PayTM’s growing mission to create a one-stop, mobile shop has caused it to flourish in the population-dense country of India, where online platforms serve a growing need to get things done, quicker and more conveniently.

Shankar Nath, senior vice president at Paytm commented on this recognition and said,

This is a superb recognition for our Paytm brand, and gives us even more conviction that we are well on our way towards creating one of India’s most loved and popular brands. We are on a mission of creating a cash-free nation by making digital payments a habit. In this journey, it is imperative that we have a mass, well liked, credible and trustworthy brand.

Interbrand is a well-known branding agency popular for publishing annual reports on Best Global Brands. It has been publishing this list for the last 17 years but the organization felt a need for a separate list to identify new-age brands.

Other popular brands which appeared in the Breakthrough Brands list include Chinese mobile maker Xiaomi, chat messenger WeChat, search engine DuckDuckGo, and Hong Kong-based consumer drone company DJI Global. Even the developer of the latest gaming sensation ‘Pokemon Go’, Niantic Labs has been able to grab a spot in the top brand list put together by Interbrand.
