microsoft, windows defender, windows 10, anniversary update

Microsoft now seems to be working at warp speed, to deliver the biggest and baddest update to the Windows 10 platform since its release. The Redmond giant has dropped yet another Windows 10 Insider Preview build for users participating in the Fast Ring.

With the Windows 10 Anniversary Update set to release on 2nd August, Microsoft has released the latest preview build(#14388) with not many extensive changes. The preview update released today follows pursuit to the previously released build #14385, which saw the light of day just two days after the release of build #14383.

This build has 44 new fixes in it including a bunch of fixes to improvement reliability and battery life and improvements to accessibility,

adds Dona Sarkar in the latest blogpost.

The biggest change introduced to the Windows Insiders with this build includes an updated Store app, which has been redesigned for a seamless user experience. With improved speed and reliability, the Store app now shows you personalised recommendations right off the bat. The app display screen has also been modified to include a blurred background(with the logo) as compared to the solid color in the previous version. The ‘downloads and updates’ section has also been redesigned to make app icons clickable and show download speed and percentages.

In addition to this, Microsoft has also fixed some issues involving the Narrator accessibility feature in Windows 10. You can now easily use keyboard shortcuts to activate Narrator, which earlier wouldn’t work after locking and re-logging into the system. It will now also read aloud the data and time when you navigate to the ‘Date & time’ setting page under ‘Time & language’ in the Settings window.

An issue with system crash bluescreen appearance and rebooting has also been fixed with this update.

Known Issues

As also reported in the last build, Microsoft hasn’t been able to completely deploy the Hyper-V containers that are being launched alongside the Anniversary Update. The containers have now been deployed but there is still an issue with the firmware that affects the ability to boot Windows Server 2016 Tech Preview 5 VMs with Secure Boot enabled. The only workaround this bug is to disable Secure Boot during the boot process.

The second bug in this update is kinda nuts. If you try and install this build in any language other than En-US, then you may get the error code 0x80004005 when enabling Developer Mode. The developer mode is activated on your PC, but the error message indicates that extra components required by the OS to enable additional debugging features could not be installed automatically.

To fix this and enable Windows Device Portal and the Device Discovery features, follow the steps as shown below:

  • Go to Settings > System.
  • Click on “Apps & features”
  • Choose “Manage Optional features”
  • Press the button “Add a feature”
  • Select the package for Windows Developer Mode
  • Click “Install”
  • Reboot your PC
  • Launch Command Prompt as Administrator
  • Run: sc config debugregsvc start=auto

Head over to the official blog to know more about the bug fixes and issues with the latest Windows 10 Mobile build. As the Anniversary Update release date inches closer, Insiders should expect to see more frequent bug fixes and updates to their almost final Insider builds.
