Internet’s biggest television streaming platform, Netflix is finally ready to take on the Indian market, and has announced a new television series based on Indian Author Vikram Chandra’s critically acclaimed best-selling novel ‘Sacred Games’.

But, what’s best about this upcoming series is, the fact that Netflix has partnered with Indian’s leading production house, Phantom Films(run by Anurag Kashyap) to produce and shoot the Hind-English series in multiple locations of India, especially Mumbai.

There is currently no information on the shooting timeline, but the video streaming service believes that once completed the series will be available to all Netflix members globally.

The author of Sacred Games, Vikram Chandra expressed his excitement on the adaptation of his novel and said that,

Over the last few years, I’ve watched with great excitement and pleasure as Netflix has transformed narrative television with its ground-breaking, genre-bending shows.

I’m confident that all the colour and vitality and music of the fictional world I’ve lived with for so long will come fully alive on the large-scale canvas provided by Netflix. I’m thrilled to be working with Netflix and Phantom Films.

Set in 19th Century Mumbai, the story of Sacred Games dives deep to only get stuck emotionally charged world of contemporary India, especially the web of organized crime, corruption, espionage and politics. It is an epic masterwork of exceptional richness and power that interweaves larger themes of India’s truth, from the wrenching violence of the 1947 partition of India to the specter of nuclear terrorism.

Erik Barmack, Vice president of international original series at Netflix commented that,

The streaming service made its debut in India in January, and announced that the company will lay focus on bringing more regional and Indian-audience focused content to the masses in the coming months. Netflix will be the first to premiere the Sundance sensation coming-of-age story ‘Brahman Naman’ to users worldwide next month. It has picked up the indie movie from director Q for a hefty seven figure amount.

Netflix is in direct competition with Star India’s video streaming platform HotStar which has recently launched its monthly subscription service called and HotStar Premium to offer latest TV shows and movies, unspoiled and uncensored from the United States. And it broke the ice with the premiere of the most-viewed and heart-wrenching series, Game of Thrones.
