Online hotel booking remains one of the most fiercely competed sectors among Indian startups today. And while newer, innovative players like Oyo have been taking the industry, literaly by storm, older ones like Goibibo and others don’t want to be mere spectators in this battle.
The 2009 founded travel booking site has thus released some important statistics as far as its bookings business is concerned.
Hotel bookings on Goibibo crossed 1.6 Mn room nights for the period October to December 2015 (Q3), growing by 400% YOY. Mobile contributed to 71% of the bookings in the month of December 2015 up from 42% a year ago. Goibibo also emerged as the most preferred OTA by hoteliers across various parameters in India.
In fact, in a Morgan Stanley survey conducted in December 2015, it was rated No.1 by hoteliers across parameters such as higher booking volumes, confirmed bookings, last minute bookings, backend and IT support, insights and market intelligence.
We are excited that we have achieved the No 1 position in India in the hotels category. We have been able to achieve the same by strengthening network effects, providing a superior user experience on mobile and delivering powerful tools and technologies to thousands of hotels,
said Ashish Kashyap, Founder of ibibo.
The report also said that Goibibo was the fastest growing hotels OTA in India and its hotel facing technologies were the most used among hoteliers.
Hotel bookings on Goibibo are diversified and come from across categories of hotels and geographies. About 45% of the bookings comes from 0-2 star rated hotels, followed by 38% from 3-star category and 17% is garnered from 4-5 star rated hotels.
Business destinations contribute close to 45% of hotel bookings whereas leisure destinations constitute about 55% of hotel booking volumes.
Recently, it also introduced one of its kind feature which allows the users to book hotels combined with flight bookings through its mobile app. Goibibo mobile app is the largest travel mobile commerce application in India by transaction numbers as about 60% of hotel bookings and 40% of air bookings takes place on company’s mobile apps. The feature though, now comes in others like MakeMytrip as well.
Of lately, the online hotel reservations sector has been garnering both — massive investor attention as well as capital. In addition to the now heavily funded and immensely popular Oyo Rooms or the old MakeMyTrip, there are several new startups which have entered the market.
Two last minute hotel booking startups namely RoomTonite and Savvymob, recently witnessed their seed funding rounds of worth $1.5 million and $1 million respectively. Another hotel booking platform called Commeasure, which allows both online as well as offline booking of hotel rooms, had secured $1 Million in the seed round last year.
And while experts are f the view that this market will ultimately see consolidation, it is still interesting to see how angels and VC firms are eager to back even the smallest startups in this space, with big money.
