In its drive to provide users with more control over their virtual lives, Social Networking giant Facebook is hitting its mobile applications with an update that promises to give users a lot more control over their notifications.
The move, which is aimed at expanding the role of notifications, will now allow you to get instant updates for a whole plethora of Facebook bustle — and not only when people comment upon your posts or when its your best buddies birthday.
Under the new reign, the notifications from the Facebook apps will also include milestones your friends have achieved, sports scores and TV reminders from Pages you are following and even updates from any event you may have joined or are planning to visit. So, the next time your friend posts an update about say getting a new job or running a marathon or…..( well you get the idea), boom! you can choose to be instantly notified about it. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
A bunch of new customization options have also been brought into play that will let you view ‘notifications’ in a whole new light. Depending upon your preferences, you can choose to get alerts for local news, weather, movie schedule, and nearby restaurants.
Reminds one of Google cards right? They do seem somewhat similar at first glance, however, backed by the gigantic database Facebook has on its hands coupled with whatever it knows about you from your online interactions — I have a hunch that someday, these new fb alerts may just prove to be even more effective than the Google Now cards in certain areas.
Along with your notifications, you can see and customize timely info including:
- Friends’ milestones, like birthdays and life events
- Sports scores and TV reminders, based on Pages you’ve liked
- Upcoming events that you’ve joined
You can also add additional, optional information that is tailored for you based on where you are if you enable Location History in the Facebook app, including:
- Things happening around your community, like local events and news that is popular in the city you live in
- Weather updates, like current conditions and severe weather alerts
- Movies playing in theaters near you
- A list of nearby places to eat, with links to the places’ Facebook Pages and reviews
With location sharing enabled for example, the notification center can give you a gentle nudge when you are in the vicinity of a restaurant that you have previously liked on Facebook.
Again though, Facebook is keeping it all optional, allowing its users complete control over which events are important enough to warrant an instant notification. The company is sticking to a card like approach and you can choose to add more cards by choosing “Add More Cards” at the bottom of the tab. Facebook has promised to keep things interesting by adding more cards to the tab.
We’ll continue to listen to feedback about the information people find most useful and may periodically add more cards to choose from.
These brand new options are being made available across both iOS and Android platforms in the US, starting today.
