Mobile commerce and payments start-up Paytm has joined hands with ad network InMobi to launch an apps and games section on its app. This would be yet another diversification for PayTM, which marked a strong entry into e-commerce segment after tasting success in the mobile payments and recharge segment.

The current portfolio of apps and games in the section includes the likes of Ola, Shopclues, Game of War, MakeMyTrip, Faasos and even on-demand home services start-up Zimmber, which raised $2 Million in a fresh round today.

However, the Alibaba-backed company merely acts as a download catalyst for the aforementioned apps, and users are redirected to the Play Store/App Store page link once they click on ‘download.’

The company announced three key executive appointments a month back which includes that of Ruchi Sanghvi, Neeraj Arora and Naveen Tiwari in a bid to strengthen its position in the online payment space.

Funded by Saif Partners, Intel Capital and Sify Ventures, Paytm has often adopted a differentiated stance route as compared to its larger e-commerce rivals, and that is where the significance of this move steps in.
Unlike e-retail giants like Flipkart and Snapdeal, Paytm first developed a payment engine and then jumped onto the mobile commerce bandwagon. It had originally started off as an online mobile recharge portal. As of now, the platform houses close to 40,000 merchants already, and if Alibaba’s ambitions are anything to go by, we could be looking at a 100,000 plus sellers by August.
