Almost a year after Apple unveiled the iPhone 5s with its 64-bit chip, there’s still no 64-bit (octa-core) alternative available in the android market. That may finally change next month with HTC’s claim to launch the mid range Desire 820.

HTC teased the upcoming 820 with two images on Weibo. The first shows a top corner of the upcoming device along with some text that seemingly confirms a 64-bit chip and a September 4 launch date. Meanwhile, a second image lists a number of other HTC firsts including the first ever Android device back in 2008, the first 1080p phone and the first f/2.0 camera aperture and so on.

This leak basically does not show which processor the Taiwanese giant will use but a little bit of deduction says that it will use Qualcomm Snapdrgon 615 – it has eight Cortex-A53 cores (the 64-bit replacement of the Cortex-A7) and a next-gen Adreno 405 GPU.

The octa core Snapdragon 615 is expected to power mid range smartphone whereas the Snapdragon 810 and 815 are used for the high end smartphone series which support 4G technology.

HTC Desire 820 will sport a 5.5 inch 720p display with a battery of 2600 mAh and a 13MP rear camera but the smartphones main selling point will be the 64-bit processor. The HTC Desire 820 should be formally announced at September’s IFA expo in Berlin, two weeks from now. Stay tuned.
