YouTube, PewDiePie

YouTube is synonymous with video, at least to the millennial. Of course, there are a whole host of other video applications and services now but, YouTube continues to massively dominate the scene. At the on going VidCon conference, the company announced that it now has over 1 Billion monthly actives. Actually, 1.5 billion to be exact!

So, there are now 1.5 Billion logged in users visiting the platform every month. That still leaves a lot of people who visit it anonymously. In retrospect, the last time YouTube announced some metrics, it was back in 2013. The company had announced that it had a billion monthly visitors at that time. Albeit the number was pertaining to all visitors, logged in and otherwise.

With YouTube, logged in users spend almost over 1 hour everyday watching all sorts of content. Based on my own experience, that equates up to several minutes of advertisements per day, per person. The results? Huge revenues for the company.

As per CEO Susan Wojcicki:

When we compare that [metric] to TV, people — in some countries like the U.S. — watch up to four hours per day, so we think there’s lots of room to get people to watch even more YouTube.

She also said that at present, TV was their fastest growing mode of content consumption. Even though it was far from being the largest already. The company also said that Televisions screens were contributing a 90 percent growth year over year. And mark my word fellows when I say that this is before the firm’s YouTube TV service! Once that comes out, there will likely be another huge surge in the the TV growth.

Meanwhile, one thing is clear. Despite all the growth they have shown in recent times, even platforms like Faebook and Twitter will have to do a lot more if they want to break YouTube’s near-monopoly over the video market. And clearly — this is for you Facebook — making YouTube videos look less impressive on their website is not the answer.
