elon musk, musk, tunneling, boring company

In addition to his already ambitious initiatives, Elon Musk is now planning to create a 3D network of tunnels under the today’s cities to curb traffic congestion — by helping your vehicle speedily traverse through them. He jokingly named his latest venture The Boring Company and is now seeking your help to name its very first boring machine — which was shown off about a week ago.

Tonight, SpaceX and Tesla chief executive Elon Musk took to Twitter to announce he will be considering potential name suggestions for the boring machine shown in the image above. And this has become a hot topic over the past couple hours, for which the tweet has been live on his profile. He has even replied to some of the suggestions and seems to be more inclined towards a particular one!

This is when he was probably thinking of a name for the tunnel boring machine and couldn’t decide on it. He then had another idea and turned towards his Twitter audience for their wisdom.

While the suggestions for the tunneling machine’s name were pouring in left and right, Musk decided to share what he was mulling about. His idea of experimenting with names started with ‘Maybe Ultimate Boring Machine, the Second’

This suggestion incited a lot of reactions from his Twitter audience. And we witnessed Musk take a dig (get the reference! :P) at the naming criterion of his electric vehicles, especially the upcoming Model 3. For those aloof, the legendary Tesla founder has recently acknowledged that the Model S-E-X naming criterion, which was changed to S-3-X is causing some confusion about their upcoming vehicles being the next Model iteration for the company. And this isn’t true as Musk has already clarified the same before.

Moving on, there were the usual and expected suggestions related to the words — tunnel and boring. But, both of them had already been given a thought and Musk didn’t exude much excitement for the same.

Some even took it to just another level. Product Hunt’s Niv Dror had some inclination towards technology, while other had musical ideas as well. It’s quite fun scrolling through the suggestions.

The suggestions are pouring in, but Musk seems to be more inclined towards this name. So, could this be official?

Elon Musk likes to experiment with the naming of his machines — or more specifically the landing sites for SpaceX’s rocket boosters. There are two types of landing sites being used by the private space company — on the ground and in the ocean. The latter are called autonomous spaceport drone ships (ADAS), which have been named — Of Course, I Still Love You and Just Read the Instructions. It is a nod to the fictional starships in sci-fi novels written by the late Iain M. Banks.
