WordPress.com wants you to be able to make your way to its platform, should you ever want to. The platform has all sorts of import tools to make the job easy for you and today, it has added another for folks who want to make the move from Medium.

The new tool has been introduced courtesy Automattic, which owns and maintains WordPress.com. Announcing the new tool the company said:

With the recent news about Medium’s change in business model we’ve been receiving a number of requests from users on how to import their content to a WordPress.com site. We’re excited today to share our new import tool for moving from Medium

In January, Medium laid off 50 of its non-engineering staff. The change was introduced as part of a shift of the company’s business model. Coming from a startup that is pretty well funded, it took many by surprise. That said though, the company operates in a niche that sees competition from blogs, social media networks, Q&A website….literally everyplace with content. So, a leaner model wouldn’t hurt.

However, the layoffs have made some people apprehensive and those people apparently wanted WordPress to come up with a way to allow them to import their content from Medium. And that is what the former did.

So, to migrate your content from Medium to WordPress, go to settings in Medium, look up the export option. You will see a .zip archive file in your Medium settings. Take this file and go to the import page in WordPress dashboard, upload it and sit back and relax.

The changes will take around 15 minutes or so take effect, but all of your posts on Medium will be published on WordPress with the same dates and times. Your Medium drafts will be saved as drafts here as well and so on and so forth.

Soon, it is expected that we would see the WordPress plugins do this job for us. This would certainly push people into importing their highly shared posts from medium to WordPress.
