Gionee has launched its first smartphone of the year — Gionee Steel 2. This new device is a part of its “Steel” series, which is exclusive to China only.

Up front, there is a 5-inch HD display with a screen resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The bezels around the display are coloured black to give it a bezel-free type of look.

The smartphone comes in a metal build, with dimensions measuring 144.3 mm x 70.5 mm x 8.6 mm. The device weighs around 160 gram.

The phone is powered by a Mediatek MT6737 quad-core processor, clocked at 1.3GHz, along with Mali T720 GPU. It packs 3GB of RAM and comes in two variants in terms of storage – 16GB and 32GB. It also has a microSD card slot for memory expansion up to 128GB.

Coming to the optics, the Gionee Steel 2 packs an 8 MP rear sensor with LED flash. With the camera module and LED flash placed on a black strip, the phone looks similar to the Huawei P9. There is also a 5 MP front facing camera to fulfil your selfie needs.

As with other Gionee smartphones, this one too comes with a massive battery capacity. The budget smartphone features a large 4,000mAh non-removable Li-ion battery. The company claims that it can deliver up to 45 hours of talk time and up to 527 hours of standby time.

Connectivity options on the device include dual SIM, 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS and WiFi 802.11 b/g/n. The Gionee Steel 2 is powered by Android Marshmallow 6.0 (why!? When we have Nougat available), with the company’s own skin on top.

The Gionee Steel 2 will be available in two colour options — Gold and Black. The phone is priced at 1299 Yuan (approx. Rs 12,748)  and is now available for sale in China. Since the smartphone is currently exclusive for Chinese users, we highly doubt it will ever make it’s way to the Indian market.
