nokia 3, nokia 6

The day we’ve all been direly waiting for is finally here. Today, unexpectedly, the brand “Nokia” (via HMD Global) has made a scintillating return to the smartphone ecosystem with the release of its very first Android phone called Nokia 6. It is a perfect time for the Finnish company to unveil a new device, especially in the wake of the ongoing CES 2017 conference in Las Vegas.

A word of notice though. The brand name may still be “Nokia”, but it is now being manufactured by HMD Global, a group which bought the brand rights from the original Finnish manufacturer.

As for the specification of the Nokia 6, the smartphone is a mid-tier device with lots of premium features, as put by the official press release. The phone is crafted out of a block of 6000 series aluminium, to give it a unibody construction and a premium feel — just like the iPhone. It sports a 5.5 inch full HD display with 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass for protection.

On the internal side, this Nokia phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor with recently launched X6 LTE modem. This provides the device with a more optimized battery life and superior graphics performance. It comes coupled with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of onboard storage.

On the camera front, the Nokia 6 packs a 16 MP rear camera with phase detection auto focus (PDAF) to produce some sharp detailed pictures, and an 8 MP front lens to see to your selfie cravings. Both these camera lenses have a f/2.0 aperture and the Finnish behemoth has designed the camera UI coupled with automatic scene detection tech.

We’re all aware of the fact that Nokia has already suffered much at the hands of the Windows Mobile OS and thus, it’s making the switch to Android. This phone will be powered by the latest flavour of Android 7.0 Nougat, coupled with add-on features. It is also packing a set of dual amplifiers with Dolby Atmos to deliver a 6dB louder sound than a regular amp. And it hasn’t compromised on security features and is packed with a fingerprint sensor as well.

Commenting on the release of the phone, Arto Nummela, CEO, HMD Global, says,

From the outset we have stated that we intend to move with speed to establish a position as a player in the smartphone category and create products that truly meet consumer needs. The Nokia 6 is a result of listening to our consumers who desire a beautifully crafted handset with exceptional durability, entertainment and display features.

Our ambition is to deliver a premium product, which meets consumer needs at every price point, in every market. We start today, with our premium, high quality Nokia 6; built to deliver a fantastic core user experience for Chinese consumers.

Talking about the same, Nestor Xu, Vice President Greater China, HMD Global said,

China is the largest and most competitive smartphone market in the world. It is no coincidence that we have chosen to bring our first Android device to China with a long-term partner. JD.com is known for its upwardly mobile customer base and it has for many years believed in the Nokia brand and sold millions of our products to Chinese customers.

As per the official release, the Nokia 6 will make its debut in China in early 2017 with a price tag of CNY 1,699 (approx Rs 16,000). It will be sold exclusively through JD.com which is one of China’s biggest e-commerce platforms.
