Twitter is introducing ranked conversations to mobile devices. The personalized ranking system will mean that users will see conversations differently. The new system will take signals like who the author of the conversation, whether he is participating in the conversation and so on, to create a customized experience for the viewer.
Announcing the new update, Twitter said,
Conversations are happening all the time on Twitter—and it all starts with just one reply to a Tweet.
It’s easy to follow and join conversations: We show you the most interesting content in the conversations first, and it’s easy to follow along with what people are saying.
The new system means that different people will see a different set of replies, while following a conversation on Twitter. The platform will take many different factors into account, including the popularity of a tweet. Obviously, you can still expand the tweet to see every reply however, even if you are too busy, twitter wants to make sure that you get to see the best content first — even if it comes at the cost of chronology.
The new design also packs conversation count, so you can view the most productive (and vice-versa) tweet in a single glance.
You’ll see a number next to the reply icon indicating how many direct replies the original Tweet has received. This number is not the total number of replies in the entire conversation.
For most people, this might not result into any big changes, as this feature was introduced to the web as early as last year. However, the company is rolling it out to mobile only now. So, if you have been rocking twitter exclusively through a mobile app — don’t be surprised if you suddenly noticing discrepancies in the time of tweets and the order in which they come up. Its not the world ending, its a Twitter update.
