Germany has had a long and strong relationship with transportation. The country has produced some of the most powerful and most innovative engines out there and is home to some of the best automotive minds in the world. As such it is not very surprising that the country has introduced Coradia iLint, world’s first zero-emission passenger train that is powered by hydrogen.
The only emission from Coradia iLint is excessive steam, which doesn’t harm the ecosystem. The train could potentially replace Germany’s over 4,000 diesel trains, which chug their way to pollution. The country is well on its way to hydrogen powered chuggers and Lower Saxony has already ordered 14 of them from the French company Alstom.
Speaking on the topic, Henri Poupart-Lafarge, Alstom Chairman and CEO said,
Alstom is proud to launch a breakthrough innovation in the field of clean transportation which will complete its Coradia range of regional trains. It shows our ability to work in close collaboration with our customers and develop a train in only two years.
He also added that,

Coradia iLint is powered by lithium ion batteries, which in-turn derive their energy from a hydrogen fuel tank situated on the roof of the vehicle.
The train is capable of traveling as much as 500 miles per day at speeds of up to 87 miles per hour. Another by product of the Coradia iLint being battery powered is the fact that it can travel without producing much noise. Also, the only by product is water — hot water rather — which is expelled as steam. Coradia iLint will be manufactured in Salzgitter, Alstom’s largest site.
Meanwhile, Alstom will be offering its customers — including Lower Saxony — a complete package, which consists of the train, its maintenance and all the associated hydrogen infrastructure.
