BlackBerry is launching a brand new Android device. Titled the DTEK60, the device is the third BlackBerry Android. The DTEK60 will be competing against the likes of Apple’s iPhone 7 and Google Pixel. However, the company has decided to market it with a price tag that is lighter than other flagships in the market.
The DTEK60 is pretty special, considering that it is the last device for which BlackBerry has purchased all the components on its own. The company decided to outsource hardware manufacturing to development partners last month, in order to focus its attention upon software and enterprise services. Rumors of the device had been afloat since the past couple of months and it would appear that some of them at least, were true.
The device packs a 5.5-inch scratch-and-smudge resistant Quad HD with a 534 PPI pixel density. It is powered by a 3,000 mAh battery that can take you through a full day of mixed usage. Under the hood resides Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor The device packs an 8 MP front and a 21 MP rear camera with phase Detection Auto Focus and dual-tone LED flash. You can also expand the device memory upto 2TB via a Micro SD slot.
The device is launching with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and BlackBerry and Google are hand in hand to upgrade the device to Nougat.
The latest BlackBerry Android device has been priced at merely $499. Quite a bit lighter on the pockets in comparison to Apple’s iPhone 7 and Google’s Pixel, which start at $769 and $649 respectively. BlackBerry certainly hopes that price will be an important influencer in a arena which no longer has Samsung as a player. The device also has a fingerprint sensor that allow you to unlock it easily as well as use Android Pay.
Despite the low price, BlackBerry said that the device will likely be a strong competitor to both iPhone 7 and Google Pixel.
If you look at feature by feature by feature, and you’re looking at dimensions and weight and the display and the memory and the camera, the battery, it is a very strong comp to both those devices.
Apart from all these regular features, BlackBerry also has a plethora of other special features that are unique to devices on the BlackBerry Android ecosystem.
BlackBerry has the most secure and comprehensive suite of software and services to connect people, devices, processes and systems for today’s enterprise of things – including WatchDox®, Good Work, Strong Authentication, SecuSUITE® for Enterprise, BBM® Protected, BlackBerry Enterprise Identity and BES12. BlackBerry ranks the highest in all six categories of Gartner’s High-Security Mobility Management Study.
Instead of partnering up with telecommunication carriers as is the norm, BlackBerry is selling the DTEK60 directly to large organizations, such as large companies and governments. The company believes it to be the most efficient and most cost-effective way to get to the customer base. Meanwhile, consumers who order the BlackBerry Android, will also receive a special goodies bundle from BlackBerry.
For a limited time, customers who order DTEK60 from ShopBlackBerry.com will receive a complimentary accessory bundle. US and Canada customers will receive a DTEK60 Soft Shell and Rapid Charger for free and customers in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and The Netherlands will receive a DTEK60 Pocket Case and Rapid Charger for free. This offer expires on November 8th at 11:59 pm PST.
