SCROLL DOWN FOR REAL-TIME UPDATES In an event that disrupted the work flow and communications for millions, Gmail — Google’s extremely popular e-mail service — went down on Wednesday across both sides of the Atlantic. Users based in the US and the UK were hit the hardest.

Gmail is very popular and is one of the most extensively used e-mail services worldwide. What’s more, it also offers access to a whole bunch of other services, some of which — such as hangouts, GChat and other Google For Work Apps — form an integral part of many corporate workplaces. As such, the outage caused significant disruption in the normal order of things, with people unable to communicate through normal channels.

While the outage affected users across the world, with millions unable to access their accounts for hours, US and UK were among some of the worst affected. Google took notice of the issue and issued the following statement,

We’re investigating reports of an issue with Gmail. We will provide more information shortly.

A possible workaround that was suggested included Disabling Gmail Service in Admin Console UI, saving the changes, enabling it again followed by another save.

It was later found that the outage affected only Google for Work Gmail users. These users were redirected to a page which said ‘Service not available, contact your administrator‘. Less than one hour after Google registered the issue, it announced that the root cause of the issue had been identified and that a fix was being implemented. Meanwhile, it appears that the service has already been restored for many users and is being fixed for others even as we speak.

As per the latest reports coming in from Google,

Gmail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users within the next 1 hours. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.

Well, lets keep our fingers crossed for a speedy resolution. In the meanwhile, you can report any other problems associated with this outage directly to Google, by going to this page.

Gmail is still facing temporary outage. As a result, Google has now changed the previous estimated timeframe of recover from 1 hours to near future. Here’s what Google’s App Status Dashboard says,

Gmail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.
Delivery of messages sent to affected users during the issue may be delayed.
