Well, in what is undoubtedly a proud moment for the Indian web community, XgenPlus — a Made in India email server software — is now capable of offering support for email address in a wide variety of languages — including our prominent regional ones such as Hindi, Gujrati, Marathi and other regional languages. This marks the first time that a major service provider has extended identity support to the local languages as well.

Yup. For the longest time ever, folks looking for email addresses in native languages had to be disappointed as no arrangements for the same was made by any of the existing service providers including Rediff, Yahoo and even Office 365 suite of services. However, Xgenplus is there to fill in the gap by by becoming the 1st email provider to support IDN based domain email ids.

Speaking on the topic, Dr. Ajay Data, Founder & CEO of Data Myxgen Technologies Pvt Limited, said

We were surprised to read in news that major players Office 365, Rediff, Yahoo are not supporting to host IDN domain names for email services and we could solve this technology challenge must faster and before anybody else.

IDN, or International Domain Names is an Internet domain name that contains at least one label that is displayed in software applications, in whole or in part, in a language-specific script or alphabet, such as Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Tamil, Hebrew or the Latin alphabet-based characters with diacritics or ligatures, such as French. These writing systems are encoded by computers in multi-byte Unicode. Internationalized domain names are stored in the Domain Name System as ASCII strings using Punycode transcription.

Mr. Data also remarked upon the exemplary performance by his tech team, adding that

I am very proud of my team. Now an Indian citizen can have his email id as [email protected]

And certainly about time. Meanwhile, the government of India has also embarked upon offering .bharat domain names to users for free. As per an article on the topic,

This is truly a Indian’s pride and honor to have this domain name. This is the first domain name system which is fully IDN till date you are getting domain name in IDN and extension in english like योगा.com but in .भारत you will get extension also in your native language like योगा.भारत  or યોગા.ભારત (in Gujarati).

The extension is currently available in 7 local languages with plans for including more languages in the future as well.

Currently .भारत is available in seven Indian languages mainly in Devanagari, Bangla, Telgu, Gujarati, Urdu, Tamil and Gurumukhi (Punjabi) and later on other Indian languages will be added to this list.

Well, integrating support for local languages and offering free domain names that are recognizable as such is certainly a huge step up for the government and is a commendable job done on Xgenplus’s part. Let’s hope that the move manages to bring in a lot of new technocrats and businesses online to the web. Meanwhile, i am sure that possessing email identities in local languages is bound to prove exciting for all of us as Indian nationals. Yay!

A bibliophile and a business enthusiast.
