samsung note 7

The beast of the smartphone market, Samsung has today sent out invites for the unveiling of its latest flagship device — the Galaxy Note 7. The Galaxy Unpacked event is scheduled to take place in New York on 2nd August, with simultaneous launch events at Rio De Janeiro and London.

You might currently be scratching your heads, thinking whether you missed the launch of the Note 6 in the recent past. But worry not, you didnt!

Samsung is taking a page out of Microsoft’s strategies who leap frogged from Windows 8 to Windows 10, while also changing their stance in providing the same as a service with regular updates. The latest flagship device in the Galaxy Note series, as noted in the launch invite has been christened the Note 7.

The Korean smartphone giant has made the decision to skip ‘Note 6’ to minimize confusion about the company’s latest mobile technologies and align their flagship device with its current S7 and S7 Edge smartphone portfolio.

Koh Dong-jin, President and mobile chief, Samsung told local news reporters in Seoul that,

We have improved ‘note’ functions this time, upgrading software for user convenience.

The Galaxy Note unveiling event is usually scheduled to be held one month before the launch event of arch-enemy Apple and its 7th version of the iPhone(intentional or coincidence!?). On being asked about the competitiveness with Apple, Koh added that,

We should compete with our own competitiveness. The most important thing is finding our own way that is well accepted by customers.

He also added that the Galaxy Note series market has always been saturated as compared to the flagship S series devices. Also Samsung has recently posted its strongest quarter results, thanks to the bombastic sales of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge phone models. The Korean giant expects the second-quarter operating income to reach 8.1 trillion won (US$6.90 billion).

Leaks and Rumors

The reason for the name change, quarter earnings and everything is all secondary in front of the features of the latest smartphone release. Lets take a look at what the Note 7 rumor mill is churning out.

According to notorious leak-master ‘Evan Blass’, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is expected to sport a 5.7-inch SAMOLED Quad-HD display, coupled with a 12MP rear and 5MP front camera. There is still no solid lead regarding the internal specifications of the smartphone, but its expected to be powered by SD 820 processor and 6GB RAM.

It will be launched in three color variants(image below) with 64 gigs of internal storage and MicroSD card support. It will be IP68 water and dust resistant and include a USB Type-C port.

The external design and body of the Note 7 is expected to be follow design guidelines similar to the Galaxy S7, i.e it will be covered in Corning glass on the front and the back. And according to speculations, the Note 7 might also get its own Edge version this year around. Samsung is also bringing the S Pen and its upgraded features to the Note 7. It is also expected to carry forward the push-to-eject functionality present on last year’s model.

The biggest addition to Note 7 coming with this release is an Iris Scanner — which will allow you to unlock your phone using your eye scan. The iris unlocking functionality confirmed by Evan Blass, has also been hinted by the circular design in the event poster.

Stay Tuned and be sure to return for more updates regarding the release of Samsung’s latest flagship ‘Note 7’
