Snapchat is perhaps bringing the biggest change to its platform since its inception five years ago. After capturing the minds of millions to share their candid pictures without hesitation, it is introducing a new feature called Memories. And against its trademark of disappearing photos, Memories will now also allow users to save their snaps within the Snapchat app.

Memories is a new way to save Snaps and Stories on Snapchat. It’s a personal collection of your favorite moments that lives below the Camera screen,

announced Snapchat in a blog post.

In a way, one can think of Memories as a gallery of pictures (or snaps as they call it) within the Snapchat app. Previously, if users wanted to save their snaps, they had the option of saving it to phone’s camera roll.

That option will be still there along with Memories — users can select either of the two options to save their snaps to the desired location. Content within Memories will be automatically backed up to Snapchat servers so users can always access them from their account even if they change phones.

Snapchat will be rolling out Memories selectively over next one month to ensure a smooth experience for all. Users will receive a chat message from Team Snapchat whenever Memories become available for them.

Using Snapchat Memories

As Snapchat announced, users can access Memories option below the camera screen by swiping it above. Under Memories, users can find all their saved snaps under tabs namely All , Snaps, Stories (collection of snaps), My Eyes, and Camera Roll.

They can go to individual snaps and perform usual interactions- adding filters, editing, or creating a story from that snap. They can share these snaps and stories with their friends from there only. If the snap taken is more than 24 hours ago, it automatically adds a frame around it to distinguish it as an older snap.

Memories also come with a handy search feature using which users can search all pictures under Memories within seconds by simply typing in basic keywords in the search box.

Explaining the feature, Snapchat said,

It’s super easy to find the Snap or Story you’re looking for in just a few seconds by typing keywords like “dog” or “Hawaii” — that way you can spend less time searching and more time enjoying your Memories.

In addition to above, Memories also come with a private PIN protected section called My Eyes. It allows users to save the snaps they do not want other people to see. So, you can freely pass your phone among friends or family to share your snaps without worrying about sharing any private snaps.
