OnePlus 3 is around the corner, and the Chinese smartphone maker is doing its best to make the event as memorable as possible. The enable a lucky bunch of its fans to watch the launch event live, the company has announced a brand new, limited edition Loop VR headset and is giving them all away — for virtually free!

The concept of giving away VR headsets is not new, at least for OnePlus. The company gave away 30,000 VR headsets to fans last year as well, so as to encourage them to watch the launch event for the OnePlus 2 in virtual reality. Interestingly, the company is sticking to the same number and has decided to give out 30,000 headsets this year as well.

To be fair, the headsets are not much like the Samsung Gear headsets — You can’t really expect OnePlus to give away 30,000 if they were — but are also quite different from the Google cardboard — which was what OnePlus seemed to have emulated while manufacturing the headsets it gave out last year. The company also said that unlike last year, the Loop VR is  going to be a cut above Google cardboard and the like — and from what little we have seen of the headset, we have to agree.

As per the company,

Loop VR turns your smartphone into a private, 360° 3D theater, and there’s no disposable cardboard here. We’ve built our headset out of robust materials for the ultimate visual experience. For a distortion-free field of view, lenses can be fine-tuned for a perfect focus. Comfort is the name of the game thanks to adjustable straps and snug inner-padding. We also made sure that Loop VR fits comfortably over glasses, so everyone can join the party.

The Loop VR headset is also compatible with most 5-6 inch smartphones. OnePlus has apparently acquired the services of VR manufacturer AntVR to build 30,000 specially made OnePlus Loop VR headsets and will begin shipping the orders from June 6.

Speaking on the topic, Vikas Agarwal, General Manager – India, OnePlus, said

The moment you’ve all been waiting is finally here. We are setting the stage for the smartphone launch of the year, the OnePlus 3, and Loop VR headset is your passport to getting you there for a front row seat extravaganza.

He also added that,

As a thank you to our community, we are also giving away our next-gen Loop VR headsets at just Rs. 1.

The VR headsets will be  available to fans who register for it on the Amazon Loop VR page and the OnePlus’s official Page. He also said that

Get ready to witness an immersive experience like no other – we are moving our HQ to space. Humanity’s final frontier maybe but we boldly take a step towards the future which no other smartphone companies or otherwise have done so before. You’ll love it in “The Loop” and we can’t wait to unveil it to you soon.

Reading between the lines, I’d say that OnePlus has something pretty awesome in store for the turnout at the launch event. And with 30,000 or so VR headsets going out, we can expect the number of people watching to be pretty huge too. Meanwhile, the company will also be holding a bunch of giveaways on it’s social media channels to commemorate the occasion. And just in case you are in a hurry to get your hands upon OnePlus 3, here is a pointer for you — make sure you grab a pair of headsets first.

Doing the world’s first product launch in VR was cool in 2015. In 2016, the OnePlus 3 launch will be the world’s first global shopping experience in VR. Visitors to The Loop will be able to order the OnePlus 3 before anyone else, in VR.

The company has put down  June 3rd and June 7th as the sale dates and has recommended users to register for the headsets on both the official website and Amazon. The sale is App only so make sure you have the application installed on your device and keep your credit/debit card handy. While the headset is essentially free, there is a token payment of Rs. 1 and of-course, the shipping charges.
