With Indian startups caught up in a debate of going mobile only (or not), messaging WhatsApp, has released a Desktop App for Windows 8+ and Mac OX 10.9+ devices. While the desktop App seems to be an extension of the earlier launched WhatsApp Web, it gives an additional advantage of certain features such as desktop notifications, keyboard shortcuts et al.
The Facebook parented company says,
Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device.
The Desktop App can also be synced using the QR Code and lets you have conversations with friends and family, while your phone remains in your pocket, pretty much similar to how the web version works.
Because the app runs natively on your desktop, you’ll have support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more. And just like the Web version, the new desktop app lets you message with friends and family while your phone stays in your pocket.
While people have been waiting for a much deeper innovation from the IM giant lately, the company has ensured that it evolves with recent updates such as text formatting, document sharing etc. And while the Desktop App is more like a “sweet” touch to the already strong WhatsApp presence, we hope for a larger change in the way messaging can disrupt the existing domains, like the alleged “WhatsApp for Business”, probably.
