Leading Indian Entrepreneur And IAN Co-Founder Saurabh Srivastava Awarded Padma Shri

Saurabh Srivastava, the man known for his immense contribution to the Indian IT industry and for leading the creation of a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in India, was recently awarded Padma Shree, the fourth highest civilian award in India.

On his achievement, Saurabh Srivastava said,

I am grateful to the Indian Government for honouring me with one of the country’s most prestigious awards- Padma Shri. It’s a humbling recognition of my contribution towards helping build the face of New India through IT and Entrepreneurship. 

Saurabh Srivastava is a doyen of entrepreneurship and angel/VC investments. He has been involved in investing in around 100 start-ups and has personally mentored hundreds of entrepreneurs. And while the award holds significance for Srivastava personally, it is yet another of statement of the current India Government’s growing push to make India, a global startup hub.

He founded and chaired India’s first private sector VC Fund- Infinity, which created companies like India Bulls, India Games and Avendus.

Srivastava has also co-founded and Chaired key institutions of modern India focussed on entrepreneurship: NASSCOM; Indian Venture Capital Association; TiE New Delhi NCR (also served 5 years on the Global Board); Indian Angel Network (now arguably the world’s largest investor group with 100 portfolio companies, 350 investor members globally and 7 chapters).

Speaking on the occasion, Padmaja Ruparel, President, Indian Angel Network said,

He is one of the first Indian entrepreneurs who have been instrumental in bringing India on the global business map. It’s a privilege to work with him closely on building the ecosystem and a great learning experience too.

Saurabh has been a highly successful serial entrepreneur himself, founding several successful IT companies. One was ranked amongst the top 20 Indian software companies and post-merger listed as Xansa on the London Stock Exchange with revenues of approx.US $ 800 mill till it was acquired by Steria. Saurabh now Chairs Steria in India.

In March last year, PM Narendra Modi had presented him an Award for contribution to the Indian IT Industry at a special event organised by NASSCOM.

He has also been at the forefront of public service, constantly striving to help create a positive environment for start-ups and entrepreneurship in India. He has served on virtually every Committee set up by government to look at different aspects of start-ups and entrepreneurship in India, for example,  Committee to Examine the Financial Structure of the MSME Sector, Telecom Centre of Excellence, SEBI Committee on Alternative Investment Funds, Bombay Stock Exchange Hi-Tech Advisory Panel, Investment Committee of the Government’s India Aspiration Fund of Funds and the National Expert Advisory Committee on Innovation, Incubation and Technolgy Entrepreneurship.

He is on the board of CSIR Tech Ltd(set up by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research to commercialise its technologies), Media lab Asia ( Deity), and was on the National Innovation Council.

His active and constructive involvement with the Government to craft favourable policies and reforms for the Indian entrepreneurial ecosystem has helped Indian business grow. It’s a great achievement and I would like to congratulate him for receiving this honour,

Saurabh is also a co-founder of Ashoka University and serves/has served on the Advisory Boards of Imperial College Business School, London and Uttarakhand and Himachal Universities in India. He has a Masters from Harvard University and a B Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur.
