Moto M, Lenovo, Moto X

In a bid to unify all of its devices under a common brand name, Motorola Chief Operating Officer Rick Osterloh told in an interview to CNET, that the company will be facing out the Iconic “Motorola” brand. It will be renamed to “Moto by Lenovo”, though the corporate identity will still live on for a while.

This, as and when it happens, will perhaps be the most notable brand change in the history of mobile phone industry. Motorola came up with a number of wireless standards and has one of the largest patent portfolio in that field. Further on, it was one of the very first brands to introduce true mobile devices,  one of the earliest of the lot being the DynaTAC.

Motorola CEO Osterloh said,

We’ll slowly phase out Motorola and focus on Moto.

Interestingly though, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing stated this post the acquisition,

It’s our treasure. We plan to not only protect the Motorola brand, but make it stronger.

The step is coming in the wake of not-so-good sales for Lenovo’s own devices. While Lenovo continues t be a solid name in the PC industry, it isn’t exactly doing great when it comes to mobile devices and other peripherals. With this brand name alteration, Lenovo aims to cash in on the popularity of the “moto” brand among Android enthusiasts and make its phones reach to the masses.

Osterloh said that the Motorola brand will live on in an organizational capacity as the name of the Lenovo subsidiary. As for the iconic Motorola ‘batwings’ logo, it will still exist, though will eventually become less prominent.
