So if like me, you belong to a group of people whose mobile bills are an everyday, recurring, yet necessary torture — Folks, salvation is here. Ringo, the internationally beloved low-cost calling app has finally made its debut in India and is bringing a single call rate of 19paise/min for any landline or mobile in the country.

Okay, so what makes it different from any other call-via-app service? After all we have had quite a few of those — Viber, Skype etc. — and to be frank, the experience as often as not, is mediocre at best. The calls are made over the VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) and thus subject to data speeds, resulting in patchy quality, call dropping etc. What’s more, in many cases the number you are calling needs to have the app installed on it as well, in order to place calls between the devices.

That’s where Ringo is different from the others. The company purchases minutes wholesale at extremely low prices from network carriers. So when someone uses Ringo to place calls, he/she is actually using those pre-purchased minutes and the call is being placed over the cellular network rather than over the internet. Thus making for a much more seamless and smooth calling experience.

As per Bhavin Turakhia, CEO and Founder of Ringo hits the hammer on the head,

Our vision has been to make calling across the globe simple, seamless and low-cost for the masses. Our local calling service is not only the cheapest in India right now, but it is also free of typical telecom-related hassles such as STD charges and differential pricing. In a country where 3G penetration is not fairly high throughout, we also have a strong edge over Internet telephony apps, as Ringo calls do not use data, and are comparable in price.

The app also offers you 50 free minutes when you sign up for the first time. Indeed, you can earn more minutes by referring friends or by downloading other apps from its Offers section.

To sum up, here is what we love about Ringo:

  • Does not consume data during calls, which are instead placed via a conference bridge that connects both the participants.
  • Since it is carrier based, you get a calling experience that is way better than anything you get over apps following the VOIP — particularly useful in India where fast internet is still not very common.
  • Standard — and quite inexpensive — calling rates of 19 paise/min for any landline or mobile in the country.
  • Save your minutes and make calls over WiFi or 4G when you have reliable internet connectivity.

You can download the App right here for Android and Windows. Happy calling!
