Flipkart, despite those troll-like technical glitches has announced selling smartphones worth $200 million, with 80% sales coming from 4G phones during its five-day Big Billion Day Sale from 13-18th October.
Our smartphone numbers have grown in very high triple digits over the last one year, but we don’t share exact numbers. But I can say that all the growth is coming from 4G phones.
said Chief Business Officer Ankit Nagori.
The number accounted for the two-thirds of the total $300 million worth of products sold in the sale. The number is a huge increase over the last year sales of $60 million worth smartphones on Flipkart. The most popular 4G phones in demand were Lenovo K3 Note, Moto G3, Samsung Galaxy J5 and J7 and the maximum demand came from the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
4G has yet to spread in the country as only Airtel has launched 4G services in over 100 cities and Aircel in few cities. Vodafone is expected to come with 4G by the end of this year and Idea Cellular has plans to offer it in 750 cities by June 2016. However, the attractive prices at which 4G handsets are being offered have made these smartphones the most obvious choice of consumers who are looking forward preparing themselves for the future.
There’s a very large chunk of customers who are buying 4G phones because they want their phones to be future-ready. So, even when 4G networks are not rolled out across the country, no one wants to buy an inferior phone.
Most of the 4G phones on Flipkart were available in the affordable range of 7500-15000 INR which had further reduced after discounts, with the cheapest phone being available at 4990 INR. Since the time these devices entered the market around 10 months ago, Flipkart has sold 6 million of these handsets.
With the unprecedented increase in the number of smartphone users in India which is expected to continue for some time, the Indian market is soon expected to overtake the US to become the second-fastest growing market after China by 2017.
