Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known to be a strong proponent of technology and its use in taking India forward, caused much excitement when his office announced his plans to visit the Silicon Valley while on a 6-day USA trip.
And while Indians are obviously excited about this first-of-its-kind trip, inhabitants of the techi-fied valley seem to be very taken with the visit, with top CEOs and other senior officers across a spectrum of corporations, extending their welcome to the Indian PM.
In a rather special gesture though, new Google CEO Sundar Picha released a video on YouTube yesterday, in which he talked about the visit and its significance to both India and the valley. Starting with how it was an honour to host Mr.Modi and the excitement everyone was feeling at the prospect of the visit, he also on to talk about Indian presence in the valley.
The bond between India and the Silicon Valley is strong. India has long been an exporter of talent to tech companies. The products built by Indian graduates from IIT and other institutions have helped revolutionise the world. But it is India that’s now undergoing its own revolution,
In his video, he talked about the potential of technology in a country developing as fast as India, and Mr. Modi’s ‘Digital India’ vision.
This will have great benefits for everyone in the Country. We will get people online for the first time. People in rural areas, indic language speakers, girls who will learn new skills and have succesful careers. Businesses of all sizes will be able to find new customers. Prime Minister Modi’s Digital India vision is central to this revolution. It focuses on connecting the 1.2 billion people in India. It has received tremendous support in India and in Silicon Valley.
Mr. Pichai also spoke at some length about the coming future.
Some of our initiatives include making our products work on low-bandwidth and even offline, making the Web accessible in Indic language, providing low-cost Chromebooks in Indian schools, investing in core infrastructure and affordable smartphone with Android One,
Besides meeting top-level executives of several major tech giants, including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Teslas CEO Elon Musk, and of course, Sundar Pichai among others, Prime Minister Modi will also address the India-US Startup Konnect and talk about his vision of ‘Start up India, Stand up India’.
The trip is not really that much of a surprise. The Mecca of Technology, Silicon valley was very likely to feature in Mr.Modi’s extremely busy schedule — which will also see him address the UN General Assembly and meet world leaders in New York — not only because of his strong belief in the importance of technology, but also due to the fact that a major percentage of employees there, have Indian roots.
As such our Prime Minister, who has always enjoyed a great rapport with NRIs couldn’t really be so close and yet not pay a visit. The trip will also allow him to reach out to the technological giants residing in the valley and discuss important topics such as entrepreneurship, technology, renewable energy and its application in India, among others with them.
We’ll provide you with a comprehensive coverage of all and any key announcements from that visit. Stay tuned.[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVwa78onlpk]
