The final version of the identity management product from Microsoft, MIM (Microsoft Identity Manager) 2016 is now available to its MSDN and Volume Licensing customers. The news broke out on social media in the morning where many users tweeted about the MIM 2016 being available.

Till recently, MIM 2016 was available in preview form only since 2014 with the last version of Identity Management software being Forefront Identity Manger 2010 R2 which was released in June 2012.

MIM offers the identity management service in organizations where identities of people between directories, databases and applications can be synchronized directly to the cloud while staying connected to the database.

The new version which is limited to online use, offers customizable password-management, two-factor authentication and deeper attribute integration with the Microsoft’s directory service, Active Directory. Identity management tools from Microsoft basically allow creating and managing a single identity for each user across an enterprise, keeping users, groups and devices in sync and provide single sign-on access to various applications including thousands of pre-integrated SaaS apps.

Additionally by using Multi-Factor Authentication and Azure AD Application Proxy, it enhances the overall security and provides secure remote access to on-premises and cloud applications.

MIM 2016 will be included in Azure Active Directory Premium which is part of the Enterprise Mobility Suite which is essentially a single product with cloud services such as Azure Active Directory Premium, Azure Rights Management and Intune integrated into it.

To buy MIM 2016, a Client Access License (CAL) is required for each user whose identity is managed and a Windows Server license with active Software Assurance is required to use Microsoft Identity Manager 2016’s server software as a Windows Server add-on.

MIM was formerly known as Forefront Identity Manager under the umbrella of many Forefront products. In 2012, Microsoft announced to discontinue a majority of its Forefront products as it began integrating similar services into a unified single service.

The major products which have been discontinued since then are Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server (FPE); Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint (FPSP); Forefront Security for Office Communications Server (FSOCS); Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010 (TMG); and Forefront Threat Management Gateway Web Protection Services (TMG WPS).

In 2013, Microsoft also discontinued Forefront Unified Access Gateway.
