Google Maps is today getting a big, much-needed update, as it will now display real time public transit information across select locations.

Information like whether a bus is running late, or a train is ahead of schedule, will now be readily available on Android application for Google Maps. So, now instead of just seeing a bus schedule in the Maps app, you can see the bus’s estimated arrival as well.

For now, the feature is available in UK, Netherlands, Budapest, Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle and will soon expand to other cities once tested successfully in these regions.

To bring this thing into action , Google has partnered with over 6,000 transit authorities to get a current view of where their vehicles are.

Maps now also makes it easier to find a different subway route that might get you there on time. This could prove a lot useful when you are getting late for a meeting and would save you from all those frustrations.

Google’s mapping service, one of the largest of such kind, now serves over 18,000 cities in 64 countries, and has over 2.5 million train stations, bus stops and ferry terminals listed.

The feature however, is currently available only for Android app users (for probably obvious reasons), and will make an appearance on the iOS app store ‘soon’.
