Oculus VR powered mobile virtual reality headset, the Samsung Gear VR will stage its first ever consumer push at the end of this year with the next iteration of the Samsung Gear VR for mobile, the company’s CTO John Carmack said at Game Developers Conference on Wednesday.
The Gear VR, which has been available to developers and early adopters as “Innovator Edition” till now, will finally make a firm position on shelves with a sole target to influence the consumer level. The consumer version of the Gear VR won’t be radically different from the innovator editions.
The official formal strategy is that Oculus goes big, full consumer on Samsung’s next release cycle.
Though, the virtual reality headset was originally designed to be compatible with Galaxy Note 4, Oculus said that it will roll out another variant of the model that would work with Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones.
Carmack also said that they are working on fine tuning the Oculus Software and filling up its digital store with interesting and luring content. Once done, they will roll out the Gear VR later this year. He added that the Gear VR store will be maintained as s reviewed digital store and will accept only selected worthy content. Earlier this week, the Gear VR store added paid apps to its library.
The truth is, we don’t yet know what the best applications are going to be.There’s a lot to explore here. This is a legitimate opportunity. When everything is ready, ads will be everywhere. Oculus is going forward as hard as we can, trying to sell as many units as possible with the next Gear VR.
Picking the rhythm of the now-famous virtual reality business, HTC has introduced its own VR headset, Vive in collaboration with Valve, the veteran developer behind the dominant Steam gaming platform. Considering the technology that Valve has fabricated to this headset, the competition is going to be pretty stiff for Oculus.
