India-based Instant Messaging App Hike today announced the launch of its first, country wide, online hackfest, The HikeAthon. With upto 10 Lakh in prizes, HikeAthon is indeed, one of the biggest hackfests the country has ever witnessed.

Software developers from across India are invited to participate in the three-day long online HikeAthon and compete against the crème de la crème of the developer community. The online hackfest starts from December 19, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. IST, 2014 and will continue till December 22, 9:00 a.m. IST

Kavin Bharti Mittal, Founder and CEO, hike messenger says,

We’ve seen first hand how well design and technology can come together to help create a simple, elegant product for a market as large and diverse as India. With ‘The HikeAthon’, we want to reach out to the exciting new crop of Indian software developers who share our passion for crafting simple and beautiful mobile user experiences. This is a platform for developers in India to express their creativity and solve real user problems on the way.

Participants can win up to Rs. 10 Lacs in cash and goodies. The top cash prize is of INR 500,000 and beyond that, the participants have a chance to win iPads and also a chance to spend a day with the hike team. HikeAthon 2014 also gives budding talent across the country a chance to put their mobile app development skills to the ultimate test.

While large-scale hackfests are quite common outside the Indian Sub-continent, India doesn’t have many reputed hackfests to boast about. Though HikeAthon is only in its first edition, but the huge investor backing Hike has and its growing userbase tell us that this hackfest may have many more iterations to come.

HikeAthon does have the potential to become one of the most sought after hackfests in the country. However, we’ll have to wait for the first one to conclude to see what lies ahead for this fine initiative. You can register for the HikeAthon here, participation is free.
