Microsoft has now confirmed that it will open a retail store in New York City just a few blocks away from Apple’s iconic cube on Fifth Avenue.
Rumors have surfaced for the past couple of months about Microsoft’s plan to open a NY store. Now, it’s announced that it will be setting up shop at 677 Fifth Avenue, in a space currently used by Fendi.
David Porter, corporate vice president for Microsoft retail stores says:
As our first flagship store, it will serve as the centerpiece of our Microsoft Stores experience. This is a goal we’ve had since day one — we were only waiting for the right location. And now we have it.
Microsoft opened a full-size retail store in Times Square when it launched its original Surface tablets in 2012, but ended up closing it several months later. Microsoft currently has more than 100 retail stores listed on its Microsoft Store location page, with specialty and full-size stores located in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. Microsoft still hasn’t opened any retail stores beyond these locations.
Microsoft intends for the new location to be “much more than just a Microsoft Store”, including an “experiential space” that will allow customers to do more than simply browse products on shelves. Fifth Avenue is also high volume due to the city being a large tourist attraction, plus its visibility gives Microsoft a stage to showcase goods and services.
